Wellington Rep Information for 2012 Trials is out in the public domain. What do you think of the trial selection format? Whats the big deal of bowling in the National Team Champ? Should you spent the money on other TBNZ ranking tournies instead? The NTC is a non ranking event and you are committed for a few months of trialling, training and fund raising before the event starts during Easters. You got to be ready for the long haul. Then there is the family thingy and work.

I still think it's an honour to represent Wellington. Also it's a challenging tournament for a number of reasons - so it can be an attractive proposition for a competitive bowler. The team and tournament atmosphere can make participation a rewarding and memorable experience.

Its always a good thing to reprsent your region. The question is how the selection process is being run. Have you had a look at the Wellington Trial 2012 version 2 info. What do you think? Will there be a version 3?

The NTC always means a lot of commitment in terms of time, effort, and money. I find it a bit annoying that the selection process now seems to be adding to that. I would be fairly brassed off to go through this process over a number of months, only to be culled at the last hurdle. Especially if part of the final decision is a subjective interview.

It 's hard to explain the impetuosity - culling by subjective interview, other than to say that it is simply bad judgment from people who may or may not have been just a little too enthusiatic for their own good. Bowlers concerned will predictably be enraged. Its tragic. Once that happens, other events will unravel. It may ostensibly be the story of how a simple selection process can be complicated by a set of circumstances in the pursuit of "getting it right that counts" Its still not too late to bring out version 3. In the NZ context the art to good PR is not to justify one's mistake, but to make an apology. At times we can be too forgiving, not fools.

i think it's not reasonable for the 4 bowlers who will not be selected from top 10 qualifiers, since the final resolution will come from the coach, manager and independent person to select the best 6 bowlers to represent wellington, then why do regular bowlers have to spent so much money and time for the trials. Wellington is a small city, coaches and managers would certainly know who the best bowlers they have around. Would that mean the trial process is just a formality thing and income based at the expense of bowlers?

The 2012 Selection process for Wellington has differed from the 2011 Adult NTC Rules & Regulations set by TBNZ. See extract “Team Selection process based on 2011 TBNZ Adult NTC Rules & Regulations
The Selection process for the Regional team MUST follow one of the following criteria:
i. Roll off (consisting of one or more trials) where the first seven men and women with the highest pinfall are declared the representatives for that Region, or
ii. Roll off (consisting of one or more trials) where the first five men and women with the highest pinfall and two further men and women selected by the committee are declared the representatives for that Region.
iii. The committee must submit a copy of the list of the trialists to TBNZ at the conclusion of the trials.
Bowlers eligibility for that region
Bowlers MUST have:
i. bowled a minimum of 24 games in a recognised league during 2010 in the Region they wish to represent, or
ii. reside in the Region they wish to represent.
A bowler wishing to represent a Region where they do not meet either of the criteria in may apply in writing to the tournament organising committee for an exemption, prior to the commencement of the team trials”
If the normal protocol is practiced, I believed that WCBA would have written to TBNZ for consideration and am awaiting a reply. Just can’t wait to see the TBNZ 2012 NTC Rules. The NTC is regionalized. The interpretation of the rules needs to be structured, uniform and consistent. I doubt there will be any exception.
The 2012 will consist of 6 bowlers per gender team.
I do look forward to the naming of the 2012 Wgtn NTC Coaches and Managers.

Boyce,
The trial process has been created in consultation with the Wellington bowlers (especially all those that trialled last year). There was a chance for feedback and comment of which there was very little. As always, people are not constructive and helpful but just seem to like complaining and whining afterwards.
All of the other comments above are based on the 2011 NTC rules. The 2012 NTC rules have not been published yet and the WCBA has been in consultation with TBNZ for several weeks to ensure that our trial process complies with TBNZ.

To the blogger - 3rd year triallist.
Ta for your views. I have put the posting of your blog on hold. The reason being that the latest WCBA trial announcement dated Aug 25th was not posted on WCBA website nor Strike. It was send to individuals. Hence by posting your comment, WCBA might be able to identify you thru logical deduction or putting other innocent parties at risk. Would appreciate it if you can rewrite it with a different twist. The pen is always mightier than the sword, mate.
Although it was not made public the candidates for the coaches and managers were obvious, Some of you have questioned the wisdom of the selection. The rules for 2012 NTC will be released shortly by TBNZ. WCBA are required to submit the team and team management names usually before the end of February 2012. Hence you might have to wait till then before you can proceed with your enquiry with TBNZ.
To put on record, yours is the first blog that i have withhold. If you are offended, I am prepared to listen. Thank you.

This concerns the summary written about wgtn bowlers performance at the NTC.
I have to agree.
They have the skills to bowl well during league night in their comfort zone, but fell apart mentally during the NTC. Can mental toughness be coached, or is the bowler lacking.
One problem is the pressure within the team to bowl well and to win. They forget their skills, to bowl 1 ball at a time and do it well, just like during league night.

This is the summary of the NTC
"The enthusiasm of the Opening Day resulted in some good scores. As the NTC dragged on, the pitfalls of paralysis by analysis start to take effect. Fear and doubt, and a lot of other ancillary issues start to affect the mental stability of the bowlers as they try to find new midline and break to attain better ball carry. Frustration and lack of self confidence as bowlers forgot to exploit their own unique attributes that are manifested in themselves whilst in desperation, they try to emulate other bowlers hence creating further confusion. Self inflicting anger and negative body language transmit unwelcome vibes towards the team morale. Some coaches were questioning their bowlers instead of giving linear direction on competition day. As bowlers moved away from their comfort zone, simple spares were not converted. The bowlers low average reflect the long day and the tough gruelling condition of this format. It has taken the life out of bowling."
